Laying 600x1200 Large Tiles: What Homeowners Should Know
Large tiles such as 600x1200 and 800x1600 have become the first choice for modern flats. With fewer grout lines, a room looks bigger and more premium. But large tiles are also less forgiving.
1. A level base is non-negotiable
A small dip that a 2x2 tile can hide becomes a visible step with a 2x4 tile. We check the floor with a laser level before starting and correct it first.
2. Use tile adhesive, not just cement
For large vitrified tiles we use polymer-modified tile adhesive with a notched trowel, and back-butter each tile. This gives full coverage, with no hollow sound and no cracked corners later.
3. Levelling clips and spacers
Tile levelling systems keep the edges of neighbouring tiles flush (no “lippage”). Combined with spacers, they give the clean, straight joints you see in our work.
4. Plan the layout before laying
A good contractor plans where the cut pieces will go so they fall under furniture or at the edges, not in the middle of the room. Borders and inlays, like the black granite frames in our projects, are planned at this stage too.
5. Give it time to cure
Avoid heavy movement on new tiles for at least 24 to 48 hours, then grout. Rushing this step causes most of the problems we are later called to repair.
