How to Keep Bathroom Tiles Clean and Leak-Free
Bathroom tiles face water, soap and cleaning chemicals every day. A little care keeps them looking new and, more importantly, keeps water from leaking where it should not.
Daily and weekly cleaning
- Wipe wet walls with a squeegee after bathing to stop hard-water marks.
- Clean floors weekly with a mild, pH-neutral cleaner.
- Avoid acid cleaners on marble and on cement grout; they eat into the surface.
Look after the grout
Grout is the weak point. If it cracks or washes out, water gets behind the tiles. Re-grout small damaged areas early, or upgrade to epoxy grout, which is stain-proof and waterproof.
Warning signs of leakage
- Damp patches or peeling paint on the wall outside the bathroom
- Hollow sound when you tap floor tiles
- Water standing on the floor instead of flowing to the drain (wrong slope)
- Dampness on the ceiling of the flat below
If you notice these, the waterproofing below the tiles may have failed. Retiling with proper waterproofing and the correct slope is the long-term fix.
